Student
Responsibilities:
When students decide to study abroad through the
International Programs Office (IPO), there are specific expectations that must
be fulfilled. The motto in the IPO
is
“Poor
planning on your part, does not necessitate an emergency on our part”
That may seem harsh, but neither the IPO, nor parents will
be there to hold hands once students leave the country.
Students who KNOW they must rely on themselves and stay on top of
paperwork, travel arrangements and pre-departure preparations consistently leave
the U.S. with less stress, and more
confidence, than those who have other people do everything for them. Students
will be much more self-assured and independent once they arrive at your host
school if they do the following:
-
Pass GS250/251
-
Have a clear understanding of how the credits will transfer
-
Discuss plans with academic advisors, parents and significant others
-
Meet application deadlines
*Note: IPO
and “program providers” have
separate deadlines and requirements.
-
Submit FAFSA if financial aid is
required
-
Apply for scholarships
-
Research visa requirements and guidelines, and follow them exactly
-
Book airline tickets
-
Attend exit interview and pre-departure meeting
-
Take care of personal business for the time you will be away:
ie. leases, banking, bills, pets, etc.
-
Purchase travel insurance and student identification cards
-
Make copies of all travel documents
-
Check and double check lists -
packing ½ as many clothes and twice the $$$$
